How to use the calorie calculator

Enter your age, sex, height, weight and activity level. The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR), then multiplies it by your activity level to get daily maintenance calories.

Frequently asked questions

What is BMR?

Basal metabolic rate is the energy your body uses at complete rest. It is the base for your daily calorie estimate.

How accurate is this calculator?

It is an estimate. Real needs vary with body composition, genetics and health. Use the result as a starting point and adjust based on how your weight changes over a few weeks.

Is it safe to eat fewer calories?

Very low calorie intakes can be unsafe. Speak to a doctor or dietitian before going below about 1,200 calories (women) or 1,500 calories (men) per day, or if you have a medical condition.
